Native Prairie Restoration
Project
Fond
du Lac, Wisconsin
At one time, most of Fond du Lac County was covered by prairie - native
grasslands that were home to bison, prairie chickens, bobolinks and a variety of
other wildlife. On the UW Fond du Lac campus, a project has been under way to
reestablish the native prairie plants that once grew on this site.
The project began in 1991 as an effort to reestablish a native plant arboretum
representing the original plant communities of Wisconsin. At present, 37
acres of native prairie grasses and wildflowers have been established, 2
wildlife ponds have been developed and trees have been planted.
